Ages Of Mystery
The child seeks mysteries
and surprises
behind doors
and whispers
in paraphernalia
and in boxes
or drawers
or a mother's hug
and even in an ant and its friend the bug
The old seeks protection
and certainty
stead of adventure
or inventory
of things in cupboards of memory
in parlors dusty
no longer puzzled
preferred to be let alone
and not to discover
that which has stayed hidden
behind broken shutters
even when the smell of wild fig
drifts by.
